This is an event photography of the No Big Ship protest near San Basilio in Venice on June 5, 2021.
Cruise traffic in Venice - to which must be added that of ferries to Greece - has been growing exponentially, as has the size of the ships used. In order to dock at the Marittima - i.e. in the city - entering and leaving the Lido inlet, the ships pass twice through St. Mark's Basin and the Giudecca Canal, the historic heart of Venice, 150 meters from the Doge's Palace. With their 300 and more meters of length, 50 of width, 60 of height, they weigh thousands of tons - and the tendency is to produce ships of even bigger dimensions because economically more remunerative - they are evidently out of scale with respect to the city, but this 'aesthetic' idiosyncrasy is actually the last of the problems of Venice and its Lagoon.
The lagoon of Venice is a fragile artificial environment that the government of the Serenissima, managing natural phenomena (the destiny of every lagoon, in fact, is to sink or become sea) have been able to maintain for a millennium in balance, the only fragile guarantee of the survival of the city.
